Origin and History
Iron oxide red is a generic name for a ferric oxide pigment of deep red color. Multiple shades of anhydrous iron oxide (Fe2O3) and its hydrates have been known to painters since prehistory. The pigments were originally derived from natural sources; however, since the 20th century, they are mostly synthetic. These pigments are some of the most commercially important groups of pigments, and their historical names often reflect the location of a natural source, which was later given to synthetic pigments. Two well-known examples are natural red iron oxide pigments from the Persian Gulf with 75% Fe2O3 and 25% silica named "Persian red," and another "Spanish red," with an iron oxide content of 85%.

Permanence and Compatibility
Mars Crimson is among the most permanent colors on artists' palettes. Red iron oxide is extremely stable. It is not affected by light and most chemicals, although it is soluble in hot, concentrated acids.
Oil Absorption and Grinding
Mars Crimson absorbs a low to moderate amount of oil. The oil absorption ratio is 15 to 25 parts by the weight of linseed oil to 100 parts by the weight of pigment. If the measurement is grams, Mars Crimson requires between 15 and 25 grams of linseed oil to grind 100 grams of pigment to form a stiff, coherent paste.
Toxicity
Mars Crimson is not considered toxic, but care should be taken when handling the dry powder pigment to avoid inhaling the dust. Our Mars Crismon is FDA approved (Section 178.3297). This means it is suitable for use in polymeric food contact articles regulated under the Code of Federal Regulations, 21 CFR Part 178.3297 “Colorants for Polymers” 4.1.13.
