ERIC JOHNSON

“Rublev Colours has graciously saved you the effort of needing to make your own paint to get old masters quality paint. The character of each pigment is different depending on its pigment particle size, structure and ability to absorb more or less oil. This is fully present with Rublev Colours paint because of the lack of stabilizers and fillers.”

ARTIST STATEMENT

I cannot deny that spirituality and philosophy are major parts of my life, revealing the greater fruits of my craft. I have dedicated my life to the good and the beautiful. The complexity of Nature is ineffable and everywhere present, I intend to capture a small spark at the root of reality and transmute the base matter of pigment and oil into a powerful painting, full of idealistic principles worthy of contemplation. I aspire to reach the highest level of verisimilitude and truth in my works on a variety of subject matters from portrait and still life to landscape. My passion and love for portraiture aims to pierce the veil of the flat surface and bring the spirit of a sitter right to the viewer. I hope that every new presentation of beauty and truth can show us the old beauty and the old truth only seen from a different angle. At the end of my life I wish to add my own link to the chain of tradition for the artists of tomorrow.

ERIC JOHNSON ON NATURAL PIGMENTS PRODUCTS

An oil painting is on a journey towards the aging process, a slow or speedy demise. It is the duty of the artist to ensure that the painting will stand the test of time for many centuries to come. This is where Natural Pigments comes to the aid of every artist.

I have chosen to exclusively use Rublev Colours oil paints and mediums because I trust the paint and integrity of the company. Before switching to Rublev Colours, I was manufacturing many of my own pigments and grinding my own paint daily for years.

Quality of pigments, oils and mediums. Your paint is only as good as the quality of the pigments and oils that it is made of. The variety of oils that are offered all in one place is impressive, whether it be a high acid oil like their Pale Grinders Oil or one of the lower acid Vacuum-Bodied Linseed Oil, there is never much mucilage to be found. The oils and mediums are clean and clear of many impurities and the proper use of them and mediums is always easily found on the site. Sources and methods of producing the oils/mediums and pigments are always disclosed. Their Gel Mediums like Oleogel and Walnut Gel are among my favorite mediums to adulterate the viscosity while adding transparency and a thixotropic body to the paint.

Selection of colors. This speaks for itself, where else are you going to find such a HUGE selection of earth pigments from around the world while also being able to obtain rare colors whose historical use dates back thousands of years? Right here! My favorite colors that I cannot live without are Lead White #2, Genuine Vermilion and lead-tin yellow.

Rublev Colours does not use stabilizers or fillers in their paint.Oil paint is simple. Rublev Colours has graciously saved you the effort of needing to make your own paint to get old masters quality paint. The character of each pigment is different depending on its pigment particle size, structure and ability to absorb more or less oil. This is fully present with Rublev Colours paint because of the lack of stabilizers and fillers. Also, the variety of pigment particle sizes in their paint which gives the paint a thixotropic handling quality while also refracting more light back to the viewer. Rublev paint is made fresh with the proper cPVC in small batches as it is needed.

Other modern manufacturers of paint are piling tons of waxy stabilizers and fillers to emulsify and reduce the amount of pigment/oil separation so tubes of paint can sit on the shelves for years. This addition of stabilizers significantly increases the speed of the degradation of the finished paintings.

Rublev Colours and Natural Pigments are a paragon of up-to-date scientific information for artists and collectors alike concerning the Painting Best Practices. Knowledge is power. Painting Best Practices has been a hub of great scientific and historical literature on materials, conservation with an overarching theme that everything presented is simply a piece of the puzzle for you, the artist, to digest and implement to you own studio painting practices to ensure the good health and longevity of your painting so that they may be admired with the same zeal as we can when seeing a 17th century dutch oil painting done on a rigid support that looks like it was painted yesterday. I can honestly say that I have been better informed as an artist thanks to Natural Pigments.
